Ontario Curriculum with an Alternative Approach 

photoOlder students helping younger students, parents sharing their skills, hands-on activities, community outings and an accent on real-life learning and discovery. The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board's Adventure Class at Queen Victoria School delivers standard Ontario curriculum in an innovative and alternative format. The program emphasizes hands-on, experiencial learning, real life discovery and integrated life skills.  A lively mix of ages, academic levels, skills and interests is further enriched by family and community involvement. The Adventure Class has now entered its third decade.  The program offers a warm, family-like learning environment with an emphasis on sharing, cooperation and mutual support.  


Virtual Information Night for Queen Victoria School’s Adventure Class

February 22, 2022 – Parents/guardians and students are invited to attend a virtual information session about the primary and junior Adventure Class at Queen Victoria School for the 2022-2023 school year on Monday, March 7 from 6:00-7:00 PM.

Note: Transportation is the responsibility of the parent/guardian if the student lives outside the normal busing boundaries for the school. What is the Adventure Class?

The Adventure Class is a multiage, alternative program offered by the Hastings Prince Edward Board of Education. It runs through the combined efforts of parents, teachers and students. It encourages hands-on education, real life experiences and the development of the whole child.

What is the role of a parent?

The program depends on the efforts of the parents. Parents volunteer in the classroom, attend monthly class meetings, sit on a committee(s), fund raise, collect resources, organize and plan field trips, help teach a subject area, etc. Parents are directly involved in their child's education.

What is the role of the student?

Students are taught to be independent and responsible for their own learning. They have input into the types of activities they would like to do in their classroom.  Students are an integral part of the team that makes up the Adventure Class.

What is the role of the teacher?

It is the teacher's role to provide a stimulating and challenging educational program through authentic, experiential, inquiry-based learning that covers the curriculum set out by the Ontario Ministry of Education.
